One of the troubles within the Democratic Party (DNC) is that often, we can’t be counted on to focus on 5 main goals, primarily because we don’t even have the attention span of 5 year olds. We can’t even agree about the 5 goals. How can anyone forget the notion that organizing the Democratic Party is like herding cats? Every single interest group can make cogent and sustained arguments about the legitimacy of their cause, but fail in one key aspect; consistent cooperation and ... Latest Read More

Misleading Attacks on Social SecurityMisleading attacks from so-called “budget hawks” claim cuts to Social Security will help to balance our Federal budget and decrease the deficit. Social Security does not contribute to the country’s debt or deficit, because it isn’t part of the Federal budget. Social Security is a self-funded, self-sustaining program that millions of people rely on for their stable retirement and disability income.

Will this be the month that tips us into action?
We can't get jobs, live in our homes, educate our kids. Get out of the way of the tornadoes. Or, apparently, influence substantially the policy decisions imposed by an increasingly vicious and mean-spirited minority.
n California advocacy has been reduced to documenting the rubble. Medicaid is cutting doctors' visits to 7 a year, for the seriously chronically ill who can still manage to qualify. To his credit, I think, the Governor just vetoed a budget that has been a disaster for ... Latest Read More

To cherish and respect ALL our American citizens and ALL that is dear to them is the essence of The American Character and The American Dream: We listen to the children, care for the elderly and look beyond headlines of myopic sensationalizing media. Americans are suffering and dying still from the tornadoes in Joplin, Missouri, Tuscaloosa, Alabama, bullying, as is our oil stained Gulf.
So let’s limit the power of corporate owned media to dictate our national focus, be it superficially pseudo-patriotic bus tours or inappropriate tweets. Yes, any ... Latest Read More

It’s getting awfully crowded underneath that bus. You know, the metaphorical one women keep getting thrown under, along with their rights, their health and their money. Unable to stanch the flow of corporate money to Republican causes, Democrats tried a new tack on Thursday by bringing a lawsuit against the Federal Election Commission to force the disclosure of tens of millions of dollars in secret donations.
The lawsuit seeks to close “a major loophole” that allows private companies and nonprofit groups to operate “under a veil of anonymity” in raising money for political work, said Representative Chris Van Hollen, a Maryland Democrat who brought the lawsuit along with lawyers for several ... Just when it seemed that all of Washington had lost its values and its connection with the American people, a bolt of hope has arrived. It is the People's Budget put forward by the co-chairs of the 80-member Congressional Progressive Caucus. Their plan is humane, responsible, and most of all sensible, reflecting the true values of the American people and the real needs of the floundering economy. Unlike Paul Ryan's almost absurdly vicious attack on the poor and working class, the People's Budget would ... Economy Read More

The House on Friday passed a Republican budget plan for 2012 aimed at privatizing Medicare and dramatically scaling back the size of the federal government.
Voting along party lines, the House approved the $3.5 trillion GOP blueprint 235 to 193 after final debate was repeatedly interrupted by protesters chanting and singing in the gallery. Four Republicans joined all Democrats in voting “no.”
The White House strongly denounced the plan, saying it was at odds with President Obama’s “balanced approach” to deficit reduction.
The vote came a ... Latest Read More

If you were fortunate enough to be watching the House floor this morning, you happened to catch the House Democratic minority pulling an entertaining fast one on Republicans.
The House will vote this afternoon on Paul Ryan's radical 2012 budget plan, but before members weigh in on that measure, Democrats were able to offer a counter-measure. The assumption was, they'd bring to the floor a progressive alternative to Paul's extremism.
But that's not what happened. Instead, Democrats brought up the even-more-unhinged Republican Study Committee budget plan, whose ... Latest Read More

Anti-choicers are trying to destroy Roe v. Wade by a death from a thousand cuts.
If you feel like the swirl of outrageous state-based anti-woman legislation is worse than it's ever been, you’re not hallucinating. Republicans really have declared a surge in their war on women, and it’s a nationwide phenomenon. Anti-choicers are trying to destroy Roe v. Wade by a death from a thousand cuts, so that when we wake up one day and the right to a safe, legal abortion is really, ... Women Read More

House Republicans on Tuesday unveiled an ambitious and politically perilous plan to resize the federal government and stem the $14 trillion national debt by slashing spending on domestic programs and fundamentally overhauling government health programs for the elderly and the poor.
The 2012 budget blueprint would not touch Social Security, the single largest federal program, which provides income support to nearly 60 million seniors, disabled people and others. But with the cost of benefits expected to exceed revenues this year, Republicans say they ... Latest Read More
